THE RING SHE ALREADY HAD
He did not need another wedding ring. He needed the piece a wedding ring cannot be.
Victor's first message did not describe a piece. It described a problem. Their second anniversary was coming. Olivia already had her wedding ring, and it was the right one — nothing was wrong with it, which was precisely the difficulty. A wedding ring answers to a day and to a promise. He wanted something that answered to her.
So I asked the question this house always asks: what is the piece for. His answer was one sentence long, and it was the whole brief. She loves fireworks.
Fireworks are a poor model for jewellery. They are enormous, they happen very far away, and they are finished in under two seconds. I said so. Victor was unmoved, and he was right to be — the brief was never the firework. It was what she looks like watching one.
