Harshey & Elizabeth · The Engagement Ring

For Harshey

An oval diamond, your two names hidden beneath it, and a green flower for hers — built for the question.

An engagement ring for Harshey to propose to Elizabeth — two people who met through a dating app and stayed. Harshey came to RALJE for something that could only be theirs: not a ring from a case, but their story made wearable.

The answer was an oval diamond held high, with their two names — HARSHEY and ELIZABETH — set into the gallery beneath the stone, where only they would know to look. Elizabeth loves green, and flowers, and the outdoors; so the green that began as the whole centre stone in the first concept migrated, by the final design, into a single emerald-set flower blooming on the shoulder of the band — nature carried beside the diamond, the way she carries it everywhere.

Designed across three directions, rendered, crafted in 18K yellow gold, and delivered for the proposal. (Dates in §3 are placeholders — replace with the true ones.)

The Question Before the Question

Something that could only be theirs.

Harshey came with a clear refusal: not an ordinary ring, nothing he could have pointed to in a case. He and Elizabeth had found each other across a screen and stayed; he wanted the object that carried the proposal to be as particular as the two of them. He told me what she loves — green, flowers, the outdoors, growing things — and that was enough to begin. The first serious question at this house is always the same: what is the piece for. His answer was a life.

Direction I — THE VERDANT

Her colour, set at the very heart.

The first direction gave Elizabeth her colour outright. The centre stone itself was a deep green oval — prong-set and lifted high — so the green is the first thing the eye meets and the last it leaves. The band splits at the shoulder and crosses beneath the setting to carry the stone up to the light; and underneath, in the gallery, the two names were already cut, HARSHEY and ELIZABETH, reading out through the green. This was the boldest of the three: her favourite colour made the whole heart of the ring, with nowhere for it to hide.

Direction II — THE VOW

The promise made plain; the names kept close.

The second direction took the colour out and let the promise stand clear. The centre became a colourless oval diamond on a quiet, tapering band with no ornament to compete — and with the green gone, the two names in the gallery do all the speaking. Read from above, it is the plainest of engagement rings; read from the side, it is a secret: HARSHEY and ELIZABETH held beneath the light, where only the wearer will look. The quietest of the three, and the most private.

Direction III · THE BLOOM

The green, returned as a flower.

The third direction kept the clear diamond and brought Elizabeth's green back the right way — not as the stone, but as a living thing. A small flower opens on the shoulder of the band, an emerald set at its heart, with leaves and a vine worked along the gold toward the setting. The names stay in the gallery beneath the diamond; the green now grows beside them. Of the three, it is the only one that holds everything at once — the clear promise, the hidden names, and the nature she loves, set as a flower in bloom. This was the direction that held.

The Final Iteration Feedback

Harshey liked the 3rd design. But he wanted to add more "nature" to this ring. We agreed on adding leaf around the flower to make it look more nature inspired.

The Final Piece

The Bloom, given its leaves.

This is the ring we kept. Direction III held — the clear oval diamond, the two names in the gallery, the emerald flower on the shoulder — and when Harshey asked for more of the nature Elizabeth lives in, I gave the flower its leaves. A vine now runs the shoulder and opens into foliage around the bloom, so the green is no longer a single blossom but a small growing thing, set in 18K yellow gold beside the light. The diamond is the promise; the flower and its leaves are who she is; HARSHEY and ELIZABETH stay cut in the gallery beneath, where only the wearer looks. Nothing here was taken from a case. Every part of it was drawn for the two of them.

Your craft is ready

Cast, set, marked.

The silence phase. The band was raised in 18K yellow gold; the oval diamond was prong-set and lifted so the light reaches it first; the two names were cut into the gallery underneath, where the wearer finds them and the world does not; the flower was brought up on the shoulder and its emerald seated at the heart of the bloom. Then the inside of the band was struck with the Mark. What began as a wish for something that could only be theirs now holds a setting, a weight, and two names no one else will read.

The Vision

Built for the question.

This piece was made for you to give. It began with a refusal — nothing ordinary — and became an oval diamond with your two names, HARSHEY and ELIZABETH, hidden in the gallery beneath it, and a green flower on the band for everything she loves. We drew it three times to find it. Carry it to the moment you have been waiting for. When she turns it to the light and sees both your names where only she will look, she will understand what it is: not a ring you bought, but the two of you, made to wear.
