A Father's Tribute

For Andy

A stethoscope drawn in gold — for my daughter, the year she became a doctor.

You came to mark the year your daughter stops studying medicine and begins to practise it — the year she first holds a real stethoscope and starts to change lives with it. We did not need three drawings. The idea arrived whole, in the telling: a stethoscope drawn in gold, curved to live on her hand, so the instrument she reaches for every working day is also the one thing she never sets down. A father's record of his pride, made in metal, to outlast the hand that gave it. This page keeps that record — one piece, one story, in order, from the bench to her hand.

The Spark

A father, marking the moment his daughter became a doctor.

Andy came not for a gift under a deadline but to consecrate a milestone years in the making — a daughter crossing from student to physician. He wanted something personal, something that would outlast him and remind her, every working day, how proud her father is. We began, as always, with the single serious question: what is the piece for.

The Doctor Ring

A stethoscope in gold, lit as it will wear on the hand.

A father asked for one thing: a tribute to a daughter who had earned the right to hold a real stethoscope. From the telling, a single form: the instrument itself, drawn in gold and curved to live on her hand. The band runs as the tubing runs; two rounded terminals stand where the earpieces would sit; and at the centre, a bezel-set diamond rests inside a halo of smaller stones — the diaphragm, the part she will press to a chest and listen through.

There was no need to take it three ways. Andy saw it once and knew. What follows is the one direction, finalised — the drawing she will one day wear, lit as the gold will catch a working light.

The bench work is complete

The silence phase. Cast, set, finished, marked — by my own hand.

The bench had the piece for two weeks. The gold was drawn and curled to the line of the tubing, the disc built to seat the centre stone and its halo, and every join brought down and polished until the curve reads as one piece. This is the quietest stretch of the work — the piece is the narration, not the noise around it. It is done.

The Heirloom, Ready

The piece, finished and photographed — the gold stethoscope, made to live on her hand.

Here it is, complete. The tubing curls from the band and comes to rest at the diaphragm — a bezel-set diamond ringed by its halo, raised to sit proud of the finger. In yellow gold it carries a working warmth: quiet from across a room, exact up close. This is the object I drew for you at the first meeting, now in metal, and now ready. What remains is the moment it passes from your hand to hers.

Coming to your home

The piece is ready. The last step is her hand.

When the moment comes, the ring travels in the RALJE box, sealed in wax, with the certificate and a letter in my own hand. It is opened in one sitting, not in fragments. Until then it waits — finished, marked, and yours.
